Retirement Reminder:
If you are at the age of 55 and before age 60 and plan on retiring this year to take advantage of the free medical benefits, you must file for retirement by submitting your PAR no later than 01 October 2010. That means your PAR form must have been submitted and approved by this date - no later. You can then retire between 01 November 2010 and 31 December 2010. If you fail to do so, you will not be eligible to take advantage of the health care benefit until next year.
The Department has also agreed to allow our members under the age of 55, who wish to retire or resign, the OPTION of receiving their accumulated elective time buy-out in a single, lump sum payment or in staggered payments as governed by the previously agreed upon staggered payment option plan.

Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Candlelight Vigil
The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Candlelight Vigil will be held on Tuesday, September 14th at 7:15 PM.
As part of the ceremony, the names of all Chicago Police Officers killed in the line of duty will be read.
We are looking for former partners to read the names of their partner who was killed in the line of duty.

Business Meeting

Standing Up With Densey
On May 27, 2009, Chicago Police Officer Densey Cole II was responding to a burglary in progress call in the 022nd District. While en route, Officer Cole’s vehicle was struck by another vehicle that had crossed over the median. Officer Cole’s head slammed against the roof of the SUV and that impact broke his neck. Shortly after the accident while he was still unconscious, two offenders entered his marked police vehicle, moved him, and removed his sidearm and wallet. This movement exacerbated Cole’s injuries. An offender was subsequently arrested and charged with disarming a police officer and robbery. Officer Cole was diagnosed a quadriplegic and is currently rehabbing in the Chicago area.
Densey Cole’s friends and family will be hosting a benefit to assist with the overburdening cost of medical bills, rehabilitation and necessary home renovation to accommodate his life as a quadriplegic and are asking for your help.

As many of our members are aware, a piece of legislation recently passed from an Illinois House committee which was set to have dramatic impact on our members. This bill, HB 5366, would amend the Chicago Police Pension to removes limitations on the rank of active duty member who may serve on the board of trustees. This legislation would likely have had the effect of allowing police officers to replace the sergeant and “lieutenant and above” elected representatives on the pension board, thus eliminating representation for the supervisory ranks on the board.
In response to this dramatic and potentially devastating legislation, the PBPA attorney, Sean Smoot, contacted the supervisors’ elected pension board representatives – Lt. Jim Maloney and Sgt. Mike Lazzaro – and the Sergeants’, Lieutenants’ and Captains’ associations and asked for them to attend an emergency meeting in Springfield with Rep. Daniel Burke, the sponsor of the legislation. As a result, on Wednesday, 17 March, Capt. Marc Buslik attended this meeting on behalf of our association.
At the meeting, Rep. Burke was very receptive to our position that this legislation would potentially have a negative effect on our membership and on all Department sworn supervisors. Rep. Burke stated that he very much wants to work with us on this issue and on other long-term matters of mutual concern. Most importantly he has agreed to NOT push this bill forward without the complete agreement of all interested parties, including the PBPA membership and the Fraternal Order of Police, the original source of the legislation. As that concurrence is not likely to occur over the legislation as it is now written, this bill is essentially dead.
We want to thank Rep. Burke for taking the time to meet with us and for being open to our position.
I also want to thank Capt. Marc Buslik for making the trip to Springfield on such short notice on his day off. It is the dedication of our members in all such matters that makes our organization so strong.
